There is often a very thin line between reality and fiction when trying to portray a character, but
this is nonexistent in Ethan Frome by Edith Wharton. ... Zenobia Frome,
Zeena, Zeenas character is, without a doubt, realistic in her marriage to Ethan, her relationship with her
cousin Mattie and the way she lives her life. ...
The original reason for Zeena being on the farm was to take care of Ethans parents who were on
their death beds at the time but while there both Ethan and Zeena realized that they did not want to be
alone in life and were both available. ... The orphaning of Mattie, Zennas younger cousin, resulted in the stay of
Mattie and the beginning of one major plot within the work, the relationship between Mattie and Ethan. ... Although Zeena is portrayed as unhappy, mean and pathetic she also in slight light portrayed
as clever and manipulative in her relationship with Ethan. An example of her clever manipulative ways is
when the relationship between Ethan and Mattie is spawned and she realizes their attraction it in some
aspects and begins complaining about Matties work around the house.
