In The Lords of Discipline , by Pat Conroy, Will Mclean is attending a Military Institute in South Carolina. He is constantly put to the test of courage, endurance, and self-control. The story opens with Conroy describing every single detail about Charleston, South Carolina. The story unfolds as we find out that Will Mclean attended the Carolina Military Institute as his father’s final will. Will’s first year, or Plebe year, in the institute proves to be the cruelest of them all. Upper class men are forced to push the new recruits to the brink of sheer exhaustion. Will’s second night inside the institute was one of the worst as cadet’s line up the freshmen and forces them to do pushups holding their gun in front of them.
