Law and Computer Software

The Law and Computer Software

Software is classified into four types with different laws regarding licensing:
Commercial Ware - Share ware - Freeware – Public Domain.

Commercial Software is the most common type of software used today. Most retail outlets sell Microsoft, Borland, Corel and Lotus software products etc, which are made readily available to the public. The software is licensed to the purchaser, not sold, in actual fact you are purchasing the license to install and use the software. This is a legal contract between the user and the software house.

Single User Licence there is an agreement when you purchase and install this software that it must be installed only on a single machine. The software is supplied with a licence agreement and operating manual. ... To install this type of software on more than one computer would be breaking the licence agreement and also the law.

Site Licence this type of licence allows you to install the software on a pre-determined number computers, the licence agreement can be for 20, 50 or 100 machines or more. This is cheaper than purchasing a copy of the software for each machine, although only one or two manuals can be supplied, extra manuals can be purchased from the Software house. If a user licence is purchased for twenty stand alone computer systems then the software can be installed on twenty machines only and so on.

Network Multi-Licence an organisation that operates a LAN (local area network) or a Novell Netware can purchase a network version of the application software, to allow it to work over the network.
