English 1200 Section 206 April 30, 2002 Are You inSUREd? The United States is one of the richest countries in the world. It is home to some of the best medical schools, and the most advanced medical procedures and treatments. However, as of 1997, over 18% of all Americans were uninsured. That means, despite the best doctors and the newest medicine available, over forty million Americans were unable to receive any health care. Countries all over the world rely on their government to provide health care for their citizens. Unfortunately, the United States, economically the strongest country, still does not choose to provide its citizens health care. However, there is a solution to America’s health care problem. In a system similar to Canada’s, government funded health care, beats any other options as the best way to provide health care for all Americans. The biggest problem with America’s health care is its accessibility. Those with no insurance are virtually denied of any health care. In The National Health Program Book, authors David Himmelstein and Steffie Wolhandler discuss this issue. The authors explain, “About 300,000 Americans are refused care each year at hospital Emergency Departments because they are uninsured or inadequately insured. A million more were denied in non-emergent settings (Himmelstein and Wolhandler, 53). These numbers are outrageous. Not only does refusal delay treatment, in some cases it discourages treatment all together. People who are refused treatment are more likely to stop seeking medical care than to fight to be treated.
