asdSaving Private Ryan Film Review Saving Private Ryan began on D-Day in 1944. Not only did it begin with a graphic war scene, but it introduced the characters and gave a feel as to what they had been through during World War II. Tom Hanks played John Miller, a captain assigned to save the fourth and final son of a woman whose other three sons died in battle. Although he and his crew of eight men were successful in saving the life of Private James Ryan, played by Matt Damon, Tom Hanks’ character and most of his men died during their assignment.
