Samuel: The Bridge Between the Judges and the Monarchy Annually, Elkanah and Hannah, made a pilgrimage to the tabernacle at Shiloh, presumably at the time of the Feast of Booths, to bring offerings to Yahweh. Even though Hannah was barren, Elkanah remained lovingly devoted to her. Hannah still grew restless living in competition with Elkanah's other wife who ridiculed her and who was able to bear Elkanah's children. While Hannah was at the tabernacle, she knelt and passionately prayed to Yahweh that he would grant her a son. In return, Hannah promised that she would dedicate her son to the Lord's service as a Nazirite, meaning that he could not cut his hair or take strong drink. Hannah's prayer was granted, and she named her son Samuel, which means "heard of God" (Merrill).
