What happened to the land that the Native Americans used to call home? Some say that European settlers unjustly took it from beneath them. They forced Native Americans to separate themselves from nature. That was, and still is, the way of the European settlers. It, however, was not the way of the Native American. Was this unfair? Should the land be returned to the Native Americans? Does the United States owe something more to Native American tribes? The answer is no. The United States government has bent over backwards making special cases for Native Americans who have the same, if not better, opportunities as everyone else. The government attempts to repay the Native Americans by returning some of their native soil. Currently, the average Native American has 59 acres of land per person set aside as reservations (http://www.allianceofcatribes.org/californiaindians.htm). There is approximately 2.623 billion acres of land and 289 million people living in the United States (http://www.wilderness.net/index.cfm?fuse=NWPS&sec=fastFacts).
