One of the first quotes its at the beginning of the paragraph where Jack London, give a very strong impression of the young man, his feelings his fears and his youth. This paragraph shows that has the young man not being in war he would have been full of grace and life but in this paragraph it shows how the fear and war took that away from him
“He was a young man, not more than twenty-four or five, and he might have sat his horse with the careless grace of his youth had he not been so catlike and tense. ... ”
In this paragraph, Jack London still goes on about the state of mind that our hero was in, fear and the uncertainty. ... The story could be considered “an indictment of war”. It could also leave the reader with the warning that “he who hesitates in the time of war is lost”.

If we interpreted the story as is we can see that the story is an indictment of war, you can see that of the lose that we go thru this novel or a warning he who hesitates in the time of was is lost” that what happened to our hero when he hesitated in shooting the ginger bearded man who shot him at the end
