“Friendship between black and white don’t mean much” David Logan once said as an advice to his son, Stacey, about befriending Jeremy, a white, in the novel, “ROLL OF THUNDER, HEAR MY CRY”. This story was set in the southern state of Mississippi, in America, in 1933, a period of Depression, when slavery, the Civil War and Reconstruction had come to an end. However, major events like the Civil War in1865 left scars imprinted in the minds of the blacks. Attempts to create a more equal society during the Reconstruction were also largely unsuccessful, resulting in more atrocities committed against the blacks. The Depression of the 1930s brought about the dramatic fall in the price of cotton, which was the blacks’ main source of livelihood. Sharecroppers suffered great losses, causing a rapid rise in the unemployment rate. These events certainly made an impact on the lives of the blacks, including the Logan family, who was presented as a model black family against which the others contrasted.
