... This is the plot of the story “The Yellow Wallpaper” by Charlotte Perkins Gilman. ... Gilman uses detail to bring to life the disfigurement of the wallpaper, and makes it almost like the antagonistic character of the story, which Elisa has to deal with. As Elisa battles the ugly wallpaper, she is also battling herself, in a sense. Meaning that she is so bored that, in order to not think about her illness, she has to think about the ugliness of the wallpaper, and this leads to worsen her condition as the story goes on, leaving her slightly schizophrenic. She despises the paper from the start, stating that “The color is repellent…revolting…smoldering unclean yellow. ... ” The wallpaper is the only “friend” that she has, so she continually examines it and goes over its non-uniformity. ... ” This personifying description brings the reader closer to the parallel of Elisa and the wallpaper. ... She has become obsessed with the wallpaper, she doesn’t sleep at night and now she notices a strange smell that she believes, is coming from the wallpaper.
