On September 2, 1945, the empire of Japan issued a formal surrender aboard the U.S. battleship Missouri and officially ended World War II. World War II is known to many as the worst war fought in human history, and it quite possibly has inspired more art or literature than any other event. 1984 is a book written by George Orwell about four years after World War II. Many believe it is a warning of how bad society might get. Others believe it is an insight to what the world would be like if the Axis Power won World War II. I, however, believe it is simply an entertaining work of fiction. Maybe George Orwell is making a political statement or warning to the world, but his thoughts do not influence mine to the point of believing 1984 could happen. 1984 could never happen today in the world of 2003. The three countries in 1984 are too large of an area to be under strict control. In Goldstein’s book, he wrote, “Oceania comprises the Americas, the Atlantic islands including the British Isles, Australasia, and the southern portion of Africa” (153).
