What is Baroque Music? In it’s simplest form, Baroque music refers to a specific period of music with highly embellished melodies and fugal or contrapuntal forms. In this paper I will outline Baroque music with the structure, composers and the instruments of this time. ... By the end of the eighteenth century Baroque music had come to mean something unnatural, contorted and highly decorated. This music is more directly expressive. There is greater use of harsh dissonance to express extremes of emotion, especially in vocal music. In Baroque music there is more use of ornament; trills and grace notes, little twists on notes, all find their way into musical notation. ... Choral and instrumental music usually moves by chords. There is much more virtuosic instrumental music, which leads to the appearance of sonatas for solo instruments and concertos in which soloists get a chance to show off their skill. ... He was the son of a barber-surgeon who opposed music as his son’s career though he permitted lessons from Zachau, composer and organist of Liebfrauenkirche, Halle. ... In 1706 Handel went to Italy in a prince’s retinue, meeting Corelli, the Scaralattis, and other leading figures, and rapidly attaining mastery of Italian style in opera, chamber music, and vocal music. ... The success of these works made Handel the idol of England, and that popularity dominated English music for nearly 150 years after his death. ... Bach moved on in 1717 to become director of music in the court of prince Leopold of Anhalt-Cothen. ... He left the Prince’s court because the new princess had no interest in music and Bach’s place in the court was diminished. ... The council did not realize Bach’s talent in composition, they saw his music as old fashioned and worked continually against him. Nonetheless, Bach’s music flourished and some of his best compositions date from Leipzig era.
