The Plays of Joe Orton
Things like corruption of leaders, the importance of money, the body without the soul and the nature of human equality are all embedded in our lives and mind-sets. ... Joe Orton’s plays “Loot” and “Funeral Games” make salient points regarding these subjects, which are relevant to the individual reader, other works of literature and the world as a whole.
It has been said that art echoes life, and this is certainly true in Orton’s plays. ...
The corruption of civil and religious leaders is another theme central to Orton’s writing. ... ” (360) By making his characters so outlandishly corrupt and oblivious of their corruption Orton causes the reader of examine his or her own perception of authority figures. Whether because of a bribed cop or a murderous and adulterous priest, it is hard for a reader of Orton to go away without a tainted perception of his or her civil and religious leaders. ... Orton seems to think that this is a pipe dream, and after reading his work I can not say that I entirely disagree. ... This passage makes Orton’s view of equality under the law clear. ...
Heller says that the body is garbage without the spirit, substitute garbage for ash or dust and you have Orton’s opinion on the matter.
