War in the Land of Egypt was written by Yusuf al-Qa’id in 1975. ... Qa’id like the character Masri both served in the 1973 war, giving the book more of a realistic viewpoint of what it was really like for the people living in the delta village. On the surface it appears that the novel deals with the war and the corrupt procedure of finding a replacement for the umda’s son, so that he can evade going to war. However, the underlying war is between the rich, powerful and extremely influential people like the umda and the effects that their decisions have on the poor. “ The Egypt of people dying of hunger or the Egypt of people dying from overeating. ... In return he would be compensated with money and land. ... He identifies his abilities by saying “I can get identity papers for people who were never born, arrange marriages between people who’ve never heard of each other, sell land that exists nowhere but in the next world, move the boundaries of fields and get people’s signatures on documents when they don’t even know what’s in them-there are lots of things I can do. ... He was promised the right to farm the land “ Whatever happens, interjected the umda, you’ll never be driven off your land.
