The reason that Democratic James Polk became president was because of his territorial ambitions. People thought that they British were trying to block the expansion of the republic into Oregon and Mexico and Polk would let them expand in to these lands. So to start the war, Polk insulted the Mexicans and sent Zachary Taylor to set up forts along the Rio Grande. ... After this Polk set up another war and capture California and New Mexico from Mexico. ... Polk liked this because he hoped that this would keep the free-soil Democrats from leaving the party. ... Polk expanded to California and since this made things so threatening to the unity of the two parties they had the Compromise of 1850.
