On 16 April, after several months of discussion, Commander in Chief Combined Fleet Admiral Isoruku Yamamoto, convinced the Imperial General Staff to agree to take the islands of midway that summer. In Yamamoto’s eyes the capture of midway meant that Japan could pursue other interests in Asia behind and impregnable wall, such would be Japan’s base at midway. It was Yamamoto’s intension to feign an advancement toward Alaska and send the bulk of his fleet to attack the islands of Midway. When the Americans had responded to the landings at Midway, it was Yamamoto’s intension to bring his forces in from the west and trap and ultimately destroy the unsuspecting American fleet. ...
