Native Son

Novelists and playwrights have often seen madness with a “discerning eye”. In the novel Native Son, a character’s apparent madness or irrational behavior plays an important role. This delusion or eccentric behavior consists of pent-up anger towards in this case, discrimination of African Americans by the white community. Some readers may consider this a reasonable response to Bigger’s suffering, while others may find it hard to comprehend. The significance of the madness increases more as Bigger begins to realize what he has done and how he views his actions. In this essay, I will further discuss the three mentioned topics and attempt to express my point of view of the novel. Bigger Thomas, a young African American boy, appeared to be going through the same things his family, friends, and neighbors were going through at that period in time; race discrimination. Why is it then, that Bigger reacts differently than the rest? Bigger is a man who wants to be and do things that appear to him as impossible for people of color.
