“Abraham and the evolution of his faith”
Abram’s (later Abraham) faith is an evolutionary process, an internal struggle/test that takes Abraham from God’s reluctant chosen to a firm believer who is willing to make the ultimate sacrifice. ... Abraham recognizes his guests to be divine and thus invites them into his tent. ... ’ And he [Abraham] said, ‘There, in the tent. ... Now Abraham and Sarah were old, advanced in age; it had ceased to be with Sarah after the manner of women. ... ’ Then LORD said to Abraham, ‘Why did Sarah laugh, and say, Shall I indeed bear a child, now that I am old? ...
The incident with God’s intention to destroy Sodom and Abraham “wheedling” him out of it also exemplify Abraham’s less than complete trust in God. He does not have enough faith yet, so he thinks that this act of God is unjust. Abraham says to God, “Let me take it upon myself to speak to the Lord, I who am but just and ashes. ... These passages conveys how although Sarah and Abraham set out as God’s chosen, they did not always trust him. ...
The gradual change in Abraham’s faith is first seen in the sign of the Covenant (God tells him that all males should be circumcised as a sign of the Covenant). When God changes his name from Abram to Abraham and his wife’s name from Sarai to Sarah.
