There are times when he plays the guitar and it sounds like a piano, or a harpsichord or an oboe or a harp. There is a depth to the guitar playing of Segovia that moves beyond mere plucking of the strings. Chords strummed are sometimes whimsical, yet he played Bach classics with such passion, it was suggested that Bach might have originally intended that they be played on a guitar. And when listening to a haunting melody such as Fandanguillo, first performed by Segovia in Madrid in 1925, it seems as if he is playing the notes for himself, reading poetry and applying colors to a canvass in his mind.
