Abstract
The purpose of this study is to explore whether "back-translation" can assist students from non English-speaking countries to learn English. Three research issues were addressed: (1) The impact of different grammatical structures between Chinese and English on back-translation; (2) The impact of different cultural backgrounds on back-translation; and (3) The effect of the students degree of expertise in the language. This study categorized back-translation into eight methods. The findings revealed that three of them, the word-for-word, literal, and idiomatic translation methods, work well because the original (English) and translated (Chinese) texts have similar grammatical structures. ... The study also found that back-translation can help beginning students of English to hone their writing skills and to verify translations. It concludes by recommending that further studies be done in this field and the results publicized so as to help students of English improve their mastery of that language.
