Language of Performing Arts. During our extensive study of dance we were to devise a three-minute dance piece based around a chosen stimulus whilst concentrating on how the dynamics, relationships, space and actions used would portray our stimulus. We got into a group of four and we all proposed different ideas for our stimulus. Our ideas were either ideational or auditory so we decided to combine the two. As a group we decided on a poem called ‘Footsteps’ written by Margaret Powers to be our major stimulus. Our poem stimulus is ideational as in our dance piece we tell the story of the poem. The poem is very religious as it is about a man who is struggling in life and first of all believes that God is not there for him during the bad times of his life. He is walking along a beach and the two sets of footprints symbolise the man and God together and the one set of footprints portray God carrying the man through the bad times. Due to the religious connotations, we decided to focus on and use the symbol of a cross to represent Christianity. We wanted to focus on elements such as the beach, the footprints, isolation and religion. When choosing the music, we decided on ‘Thunderstorm’ by Craig Armstrong. This auditory stimulus influenced our movements as the music is very slow and creates a relaxed, by the water feel. This was the perfect music as it includes the timbre of the strings, the harp and the piano. These instruments create a very relaxed feel and it creates imagery as the waves of a sea can be imagined. It gives a significant atmosphere and setting of a beach, which is the scenery included in the poem. The music enabled us to create a motif that portrayed the movement of the waves.
