Employee absenteeism is inevitable and it is costing businesss millions of dollars each year. It is on the rise, particularly from sickness, in spite of the advancements in medical technology and the improvements that have been made in working conditions, employee benefits, facilities and general technological changes.
Purpose and scope
The objective of this report is to find ways to effectively reduce absenteeism to acceptable levels. Past and present conditions were examined to find out the reasons behind the high rates of absenteeism. Information was gathered from employee evaluations and personnel reports while data was gathered on industry trends and practices for controlling absenteeism.
A thorough investigation was made of techniques and practices advocated by other companies and were found to be effective in controlling absenteeism. The results show the factors causing absenteeism, the costs to the employer, the role supervisors play in reducing absences, and guidelines for establishing effective controls.
