Elderly people are not getting proper nutrients because of deficiencies, excesses, or imbalances in food or diet, according to the survey sponsored by the Nutrition Screening Initiative, a coalition of more than 30 national medical, health and aging organizations (Family Haven, 1993). There are many reasons why it is very important that the elderly have the right nutrients in their diet. ... Another reason is that since the elderly get more infections and diseases, their stay in the hospital is longer and more expensive (Nursing Home Abuse Resource Center, 2003). ... The risk factors for malnutrition are physical incapacity to obtain and/or prepare food, cognitive problems, medical conditions requiring dietary changes, poor dental health, trouble chewing and/or swallowing, high consumption of alcohol, social isolation and/or depression, use of multiple medications (Meals on Wheels, 2003), and losses in their senses of taste and smell (Family Haven, 1993). Along with risk factors, there are many consequences for the elderly not having the proper diet.
