... Florence Nightingale is a woman who, throughout the years, has been portrayed as a saintly, gentle, and complacent character. It is often said, when a person is being too soft and gentle in an argument, “Don’t be such a Florence Nightingale”. ... However, as expressed in Lytton Strachey’s essay, these character traits are not true to the person that Florence really was. After reading this essay, one is left with a much different impression of Florence Nightingale’s character and personality characteristics.
Lytton Strachey’s view of Florence Nightingale is clearly outlined in his essay. ... Strachey portrays Florence Nightingale as a much stronger and more dedicated woman. ... In reality Florence Nightingale was nothing like the person people believed her to be. ... He confronts the romanticized view of Florence Nightingale, and digs into her true character and personality. The prior view of Florence Nightingale strips her of the cost and struggle that went into her saintly life. Strachey takes a different stance, and accentuates Florence’s struggle and hardship. ... In order that he may clearly convey his ideas, Strachey uses several literary tools to help the give the reader a keen sense of the true Florence Nightingale.
