The Vietnam War
The stigma of the Vietnam War could have been prevented very easily. The United States could have done more to work things out without having to go to war. The United States also should not have become so involved in a war that did not directly affect us.
The Vietnam War (1955-1975) was an unsuccessful effort by South Vietnam and the United States to prevent the communists of North Vietnam from uniting South Vietnam with North Vietnam under communist rule (Background 1). Beginning in 1956, North Vietnam began using military actions to try to unify with South Vietnam. ... By 1962, there were over 11,000 military personnel in Vietnam (Background 1). In 1964, the United States resolved to declare war following the Gulf of Tonkin incident, where the U. ... destroyer Maddox was fired on by Vietnam patrol boats (Klar 1). After almost a decade, the war came to an end on January 27, 1973 with the Paris Peace accords.
The American people were divided over support of the war. Older generations believed that war was the best way to protect America from communism.
