In the movie “I am Sam,” Sam displays a number of signs of autism as well as mental retardation. Sam’s favorite book that he reads to his daughter is Green Eggs and Ham. ... Seuss book, however, the reason that this is the most advance book Sam can read is because this is the highest reading level that Sam is able to understand because of certain psychological and behavioral characteristics that he has. Sam’s intelligence level is equivalent to that of a seven-year-old child. Sam has difficulty reading words and phrases above a seven-year-old cognitive level. When the psychologists, the court, and even Sam’s lawyer (Rita Harrison “nicely tied in with the Beatles I must say”) tried to explain certain issues to him, he could not comprehend them unless those issues were explained to him in simple terms.
