The Bestbooks/Paige Turner negotiation was by far my most successful negotiation so far. All of the planning and work I did before the negotiation truly paid off because I was prepared for each strategy that my opponent used. Strong planning also helped me to execute my own strategies and to achieve negotiation outcomes significantly better than my target deal (28,100 points achieved with a 26,400 point target). I found that the changes I made in planning for this negotiation, which included developing the specific language and sequence I wanted to use, helped me to maintain a consistent flow and always know what should be discussed next. However, the smooth and consistent flow of the negotiation made it very clear that the way we began negotiating was extremely awkward and uncomfortable. I know that strong openings and closings are usually the most influential parts of presentations and speeches, but so far I have failed to apply this methodology to negotiation. I realize now that it is essential to make both parties comfortable with all aspects of the negotiation from the very beginning. Consequently, for the next negotiation, I hope to further refine my planning session by constructing an appropriate and comfortable way to open and close the negotiation process.
One problem I faced in the last negotiation which I hoped to correct was the specific language and sequencing of the things I wanted to say.
