... One is the notion of repressed memories. ... Then all of a sudden, like a flash of lightning, something may trigger a traumatic memory that has been repressed. Not long after this notion was conceived, did the opposing side arise, this side being the idea of false memories. False memories are the notion that some, not all, repressed memories are not really “repressed” but that they never actually took place. The debate between these two concepts in psychology have been ongoing for several decades, here both sides are presented. ... It is difficult to distinguish when a repressed memory comes to the surface if it is authentic or not. ... Those that question the authenticity of these repressed memories do so in part because of the intensity and sincerity of the accused persons who deny the abuse. In a loose way, it seems that alleged repressed memories are believed or not believed based on the emotions and feelings of those involved. ... In some cases where clinicians are advocates of repressed memories, they are biased towards the symptoms and, in a sense, go looking for repressed memories. ... Granted, people who have memories of traumatic childhood events probably do report these symptoms such as, “feeling down or blah most of the time” or “feelings of inadequacy/lack of self-confidence. ... ”
Another source for triggering repressed memories that may not be true is the suggestions made by the therapists. ... The client is then told to try to remember the memories of the experiences they supposedly had. In many cases, clients are able to “bring back” those memories. The question now is do researchers have evidence that memories actually can be created?
Loftus and Gary (1994) reported that there are nearly 20 years of existing data on the creation of false memories through exposure to misleading information. ... These reports do not suggest that all unburied repressed memories are false. Instead, it is merely proving that it is possible to create vivid and clear memories accompanied with great detail through suggestion.
Suggestion may be one of the more widely used tools for therapists to uncover repressed memories, but other techniques are also used. ... When Freud first conceived the notion of repressed memory, these are the techniques he used, mostly hypnosis, interpersonal pressure, leading, and suggestion. ...
