School Vouchers: Are they the right thing for American Education?
School choice is quickly becoming the latest buzzword of the new millennium. Larger cities have inter-district choices available to students but for the majority of the country, who reside in single school communities, the choice most likely is limited to public or private. ... The people that instituted a given private school had a mission in mind. ... So they went out and found the best teachers and the best books and started their own school. Here’s an analogy: think of a private school like you do home schooling, accept on a larger scale. If my neighbor is teaching her kids better than my public school teaches mine, I might want to send my kids next door. ... Many solutions for achieving this have been suggested and rising to the top of popularity is an idea called school vouchers. This idea of course means taking the funds that the state would normally spend on a child in public school, around $2600 usually, and in the form of a check or coupon allowing the parents to apply that money to private school tuition. This means the freedom of enrolling their child in the school of their choice, assuming the school would have them. ... For instance, the yearly tuition for High School at Cassidy in Oklahoma City, OK is greater than $10,000.
We the people have debated and discussed at length the possible solutions for raising the bar in our education system. ... But vouchers are not the only alternative to public schools. ... According to popular belief, if you want a good education you have to go with one of the options above because you are not going to get it in the current system. ... Do we not have a responsibility as parents to enhance what our children learn in school? How active are we as parents in the public school system? ... “The government owes us an education,” says Joe Public. ... The American government is of the people, for the people, by the people. ... I don’t think the fathers of the American education system intended public school to teach children the “golden rules”.
