Guillain-Barré Guillain-Barré also known as acute inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy and Landry’s ascending paralysis is a neurological disorder that affects the peripheral nervous system. Inflammation in the PNS causes the characteristic beginning signs and symptoms of rapid a onset of symmetrical of weakness and tingling in the legs. The symptoms then usually ascend to the upper body, arms, facial and breathing muscles. Many cases of Guillain-Barré are mild; however, the symptoms can increase until the patient is virtually paralyzed. Patients of this severity are in life threatening situations and many times placed in the ICU to be monitored, because Guillain-Barré can interfere with breathing, and occasionally heart rate and blood pressure. The cause of this disorder is unknown; however, several cases occur a few days or weeks following an infection (most commonly an upper respiratory or gastrointestinal illness), and intermittently after surgery or vaccination.
