--Phineas Gage-- The Human Marvel September 14, 1848 Sometimes we take the marvel of what being a human being is for granted. We don’t realize how much of a marvel we as humans are. But in the small town of Cavendish, Vermont the townspeople there know what kind of a marvel it really is. It all started September 13, 1848 near the small town of Cavendish, VT. on a railroad construction site. A 26 year-old Phineas Gage is the foreman of a group of men that are blasting through granite bedrock making a railroad right-of-way. He was a man that all the workers look up to and respect. He had the special skill of blasting and he carried a special tool for the job, a tamping iron. Phineas had it specially made by a blacksmith in the town. It is a rod that is 3ft.7in. long and weighs 13½ pounds, it resembles an iron spear. At its base it is fat and round (about and inch and three quarters in diameter), the fat end is for packing down loose gunpowder and sand. The other end of the rod comes to a sharp narrow point and is for poking holes through the gunpowder to set the fuse.
