Canada is internationally recognized as a culturally diverse nation that emphasizes the concept of “the mosaic”. What does Canadian mosaic stands for? According to the dictionary definition, mosaic means the making of picture or designs by inlaying small bits of colored stone, etc. ... Similarly, Canada itself holds various different cultures tied together to form a big multicultural Canadian society and that define “the Canadian mosaic”. ... From such a perspective, the vision of Canada as a cultural “mosaic” appears legitimate. However, if we look at some of the historical facts, such as discrimination against aboriginal people, treatment of Canadian with Chinese, Japanese, Indian, and Black immigrants, Canadian mosaic appears to be a myth. Even though, Canada is known as a dynamic mosaic of multiculturalism where people live and work together in harmony, there are still some historical, social contemporary, as well as literary facts that favor the statement, “the Canadian mosaic is a mythology”.
First of all, there are some historical facts such as the history of Chinese, Japanese, and Indian immigration, which are evident that Canadian mosaic is a mythology. ... The building of the CPR, the Canadian Pacific Railway, is a good example that shows the imperfect treatment of Canadian society with Chinese. ... However, Canadian treatment of them is, historically, far less than honorable.
Another historical fact about myth of the Canadian mosaic is the history of East Indian community and Japanese community. Bruce Rickets reports that there were more than 2000 Indians in Canada around 1900 but Canadian felt that the growing number of Indians would take away their jobs, so they wanted the brown invasion to stop. ...
