A male participating in such an activity as dance is often subjected to criticism, ridicule and perhaps humiliation, causing low levels of participation in such activities. ... This is the reason for the disproportionate numbers of males participating in these “feminie” sports compared to those participating in football, basketball and baseball, (Greendorfer, 1991) and a major reason for the low interest by males for the social dance programme, women too are also disillusioned when sports are characterised as female sports. ...
Participation by students at both St Margaret’s and Churchie in social dance may be improved by the correct marketing, which is specific to males and females. For male interest to be increased Social dance needs to target the stereotypical characteristics of males and male sports and link these to dance.
