In Ibsen’s play, A Doll House, Dr. Rank not only serves as Torvald’s friend but as a moral and corresponding companion to Nora. At the surface he is only a secondary character that lacks effect on the plot. As the story evolves his motives and situation turn him into a vital part of the plot and of Nora’s life. In the beginning of the play Rank plays Torvald’s friend. He seems to have multiple things in common with Torvald but his relationship can be better paired with the one of Nora. It is evident that Rank is interested in Nora and his incentives are in favor of her interest.
