... The classic fairy tales with unhappy endings resembles his famous “The Lady of Shalott”. A story of a lady’s desperate love for the greatest of Arthurian knights, Lancelot, a love that ends in the lady’s death. ... There a castle stands with “Four gray walls, and four gray towers” (Shalott line 15), deep inside these walls the lady of Shalott dwells. ... Being that nobody has seen her, nobody knows her, but “Only reapers, reaping early” (Shalott line 28) have heard her singing and relay to the reader the story of “ The Lady of Shalott”.
The lady of Shalott with little care weaves by night and day (Shalott line 37). A curse placed upon her, unknown to the reader by whom, enables
the lady “To look down to Camelot” (Shalott line 11). ... The lady’s mind wonders as she looks upon a mirror to allow herself the pleasure of the outside world. ... “I am half sick of shadows”, said The Lady of Shalott” (Shalott lines 71-72). The reflection in the mirror of the real world of only images reflects only held of what the lady wants out of life. ... The lady described, “His coal-black curls as on he rode” (Shalott line 103). The lady seemed like a princess who had just looked upon her prince. Her prince being Sir Lancelot, only he was unaware of the images he reflected to the lady of Shalott.
