Terrorism in Full Attendance! ... The shattered picture of a perfect, peaceful society, created and believed by Americans, came along with the reality of an outside world, the terrorism world. As Americans searched for one to blame they also had to inquiry issues such as the definition of terrorism, its ideological and psychological aspects, and the significance of the World Trade Center as a target.
The book Perspectives of Terrorism defines terrorism as the use of violence when its most important result is not the physical and mental damage of the direct victims but the psychological effect produced on someone else. Furthermore, terrorism also involves, in addition to the act, the emotion and the motivation of the terrorist. ... Although, violence correlates with terrorism, the main and vital difference is that terrorism seeks for a further damage, which is to affect those that are not necessarily involved in the attack. As Brian Jenkins states in his quote, "Terrorists want a lot of people watching, not a lot of people dead," clearly illustrating the core divergence among violence and terrorism (1975:15).
The atrocious acts of terrorism against the World Trade Center immediately lead to the inquiry of why innocent lives were taken. Unfortunately, understanding the ideology of terrorism is not as simple as many would wish—however, there are innumerous concepts explaining the ideology behind terrorism. ... For most part, terrorism’s ideology is closely related to claims of injustice and oppression, and this specifically relates to the September 11th attack. ... Obviously, the decision was to embrace a war against terrorism. ... Polls taken at the beginning of the war against terrorism indicated that a nearly 70% of the population was in agreement with Bush to engage in a war against terrorism. ...
The object of terrorism clearly is one of humiliation. The special sense of outrage and terror evoked by acts of terrorism can best be related to terrorist self-esteem and their other functions, such as those dealing with coherent and cohesive thought, feeling, and individual and group identity. So, why does a terrorist commit his act? ... In the point of view of the terrorist; the attack against the Twin towers would: damage the illusion of stability lived by Americans; shattered the super power status of the US in the world; bring special attention (both national and international) to their cause; and cause a negative affect in the USA’s economy,
Perversely, Americans for most part lack to recognize the fact that terrorism is not a new “trend” that started with the World Trade Center attack.
