Proposal Another feature of Singapore will be the cultural diversity of the island. The immigrants of the past have given the place a mixture of Malay, Chinese, Indian, and European influences. In the 18th century, Sir Stamford Raffles designated areas to each of these races and till today, each of these areas still bears its own unique character. The streets of Chinatown still provides glimpses of the old ways with its numerous temples, decorated terraces and its conglomeration of shops and activity; Muslim characteristics are prominent in Arab Street with shops there selling sarongs, songkok hats and fine muslim food etc. The grand Sultan Mosque there is also the biggest and liveliest mosque in Singapore. Little India along Serangoon Road still has its distinct ambience too. This modest but colourful area of wall-to-wall shops, pungent aromas and Hindi film music is a relief from modernity of many parts of the city. The aroma of Indian spices mixing with the scent from burning incense together with the bright colours, great food, interesting shops and warm smiles all combine to form a lasting impression.
