This is the story of my first trip overseas in the fall of 1994. I had arrived in Norfolk, Virginia two days after my twenty-third birthday, and after completing basic training in Chicago, I reported for duty at the naval air command in Norfolk. After a small mountain of paper work, I was instructed to report to a temporary duty station where I met others bound for the USS George Washington. At that time it was currently some where in the Meditrianian Sea. After spending four days in what I called the "Easy Street Inn", the call came in for us to fly out to the ship and begin processing into our new lives aboard the USS George Washington (or as the locals called her, the 'GW'). After packing up our things we loaded up into a white government van and headed to the airport. Everyone was quite talkative on the way to the airport, and that was to be short lived, as we were about to embark on a very long trip. When we got to Norfolk International Airport, we checked in our! bags and boarded the plane. Filled with excitement of the journey ahead, we found ourselves bound for New York City. When we landed at JFK in New York, we were once again loaded into another van and transported across the city to LA Guardia International Airport. Along the way to the airport, we took a scenic view of New York, and got to see some of the pleasant sites on the streets she had to offer. I was stunned at some of the highlights along the way. I could not believe my eyes at the price of gas a whole $1.30 per gallon! By today's prices, we would be fighting over gas that cheap.
