Margery Kempe was an eccentric woman who lived during the Middle Ages. ... Margery’s experiences, even though extreme, exemplified the life of the layperson by sharing in their desire for a deeper understanding of spirituality and identifying with their spiritual struggles. Margery apparently attains this spiritual depth within her lifetime, yet acquires it through a different avenue than the layperson. ... A major accusation Margery faces is being labeled a Lollard, which carried a similar connotation to that of a Heretic. ... Many people wanted to live the “good life” prompting the average person, like Margery, to look up to someone. ... Accroding to Margery Kempe, the Chuch and its participants were all caught up in the materialistic life and daily habits of man; they were not living the life of a sacred man and giving up all of the habits of man.
Since the Church appears not to be the answer, Margery became the model for the layperson. ... ” (Kempe 41). ...
However, Margery did not always live this way, “she had long been troubled by these and many other temptations, so that people thought she should never have escaped from them alive” (Kempe 39). An example of this is when Margery was tempted to cheat on her husband. ... She had to “give up which you love best in this world, and that is the eating of meat” (Kempe 43) and she “shall never come into hell nor into pergatory” (Kempe 43). This gave Margery the abiltiy to be empathtic towards people, but firm in her belief that they had sinned and should repent. ... She told him that he will be saved “if [he] follow[ed] [her] advice… and God shall give you grace for love of me” (Kempe 49). Margery understood their struggles because she had been there, yet due to her deeper understanding of spirituality because of her direct contact with God, she was able to live a less sinful life.
Margery choose a very difficult path; the life that she lived did not model the average person.
