HOOP DREAMS

"Hoop Dreams" by Ben Joravsky, is a wonderful documentary that depicts the experiences of two kids Arthur Agee and William Gates who are just starting high school and playing high school basketball. These two kids come from low income families in the projects of Chicagos West Side and are chasing their dreams of playing basketball in the NBA, and making it through everyday life as black boys. ... While watching the documentary Hoop Dreams, I discovered this movie to be distinctly influential to the lives of many young black men and women as it portrays the American dream of “making it” out of poverty.
The filmmaker brings us a brief interview with Bo and Sheila Agee; he interviews Clarence William’s brother in the beginning of the movie, and also both kids about the struggles of living in the projects and their dreams. ... This breaks the cultural stereotype of black athletes that never make it out of college with a degree, it also shows us that as human beings our dreams can fail and we should have back up plans. ... His life symbolizes to us that things change and that dreams do come true. ...
Hoop Dreams gives a more diverse and broad meaning, it covers all aspect of success and failure, but it also breaks stereotypes and pressure that black sports athletes face in school and from family to succeed.
