The sport of volleyball is believed to have originated in the United States, although there was a game being played in England that closely resembled volleyball back as far as 1591. ... He originally called the game mintonette, and later was called, what we know it as today, volleyball. The name of the game was believed to be changed because during a demonstration game, someone mentioned that the players seemed to be volleying the ball back and forth, and that instead of being called mintonette, volleyball would fit the description of the game better. This is how the now very popular game of volleyball began.
On July 7, 1896, the very first game being known as “volleyball” was played at Springfield College and by 1900 a special ball was finally designed for this specific sport. Also in 1900, volleyball began to spread across the Southern Hemisphere, Canada, and even the Orient. ...
