INSPECTOR SYBILS MYSTERY OF A CHAOTIC CASE-Inspectors Work Who’s who Bramley Birling A heavy looking rather portentous man in his middle fifties, with fairly easy manners but rather provincial in his speech. Bramley Birling can be viewed in several ways. He is head of the family, head of the firm and represents the values of Edwardian Britain. The fist set directions and scene setting instructions of the play make this very clear. As the head of the family he hands around the decanter of the port, makes speeches and presides over the gathering. Bramley Birling is a traditionlist. He has worked hard, made a fortune married above himself taken on all sorts of civic duties and is very pleased with himself. The last thing that he wants is any change which would affect his new found status. Gerald Dean An attractive chap about thirty rather too mainly to be a dandy but very much the easy well –bred young man about town. He is the son of a local respected manufacturer sir George and his wife Lady Croft. He does not have to show off his social status unlike his future father in law, because he has known it all his life and takes it for granted. He is able to take his drink, has been educated to be polite at all times is really rather relaxed about his life. Unlike Eric he is a treated man to man by Birling as an equal , not wayward child. Sheila Birling A pretty girl in her early twenties, very pleased with life and rather excited. Sheila is the character who develops most in the play. From the opening description of her, followed by the account of her getting Eva Smith the sack.
