Tarrentino

How does Quentin Tarantino use Cinematography and Mise-en-Scene to have effect in the “Son of a Preacher Man” scene in ‘Pulp Fiction’? In this scene, I feel as if Tarantino is trying to establish a relationship between Mia and Vincent. He tries to show that although Mia and Vincent are different, they are very much alike. The both operate on the same wavelength. They play games together and do the same things together. We know that they will like each other even before we see them formally introduced. At the beginning of the scene we are shown the protagonist, Vincent walking through two statues on either side of the side-walk with an erotic pose. There are sounds of crickets which suggest that it is hot and damp where we see Vincent and makes us feel uncomfortable. We get a CU of him, from behind walking up towards the house. He is at the centre of the camera frame as the camera follows him. The camera stops at the two statues as Vincent continues to walk. This may suggest that the statues are an entrance into the private world of Mia’s and that there is some sexual tension. When Vincent turns the corner to face the door, we get another shot of him. This time he is left of the shot in the dark. This could show that the heroin is now getting to him and he is unable to continue to walk in a straight line, at the centre of the camera frame.
