Media Influence

Sexual messages on television have a negative influence on adolescents. Sexual messages on television are causing adolescents to feel pressure about having sex. Messages on TV sitcoms are being portrayed in ways which influence adolescents to believe casual sex is ok, and failing to mention consequences. Both boys and girls are affected by sexual messages on certain programs, including Friends, Dawson‘s Creek, and The Real World on MTV. In my case, Dawson’s Creek influenced me to believe having sex while in high school, being as young as 14, is acceptable. The character Jen, a young female, that I felt I related to, began having sex at an early age on the show.
