English Assignment Compare The Red Room by H.G. Wells with Farthing house by Susan Hill. Which is the more effective ghost story? A typical ghost story will include some essential ingredients. There is usually a myth e.g. Dracula, Which the story is based around. The setting plays a vital role because it sets the atmosphere. The setting for a ghost story is usually an isolated house. In most good ghost stories there are usually two or three main characters, an innocent victim, a sceptic (a non-believer) and something supernatural. At the beginning of each ghost story there is a build up, something that gets the reader intrigued to make them want to read on. It is very important to have a good beginning to a story because if the first chapter is interesting and has a sort of cliffhanger it makes the reader want to finish the story. There is a challenge in red room, which is trying to stay focused and calm. In farthing house there is a secret, which is about the woman, which is what the reader is trying to find out from the beginning. In the red room the main character (a sceptic) it there to prove a point, which to him is there is no such thing as ghosts.
