The struggle of gay and lesbian individuals for full equality is one of my generations most important and controversial civil rights movements. Currently, in the United States, approximately twenty states have laws that criminalize against gay and lesbian couples. Among a variety of their negative effects on our society, and specifically gay and lesbian individuals, some laws deny custody or prevent homosexual couples from becoming adoptive parents. The laws do not demonstrate any of the current data on homosexual families or parenting, but instead rely on myths and stereotypes which have been culturally transmitted. ...
Current research illustrates that the children of lesbian and gay parents do not differ significantly in the development of gender identity or sexual orientation when compared to children raised by heterosexual parents. Heterosexual and homosexual parents display many similarities in their parenting styles, which are not influenced by sexual orientation, but rather by an ability to create a nurturing home environment. In addition, research indicates that the vast majority of lesbian, gay, and bisexual individuals grow up in heterosexual families. ... Studies have shown that lesbian and gay parents have a tendency towards being more open with their family members. ... If every individual who could possibly be considered “immoral” was restricted from parenting, there would be almost no parents left to adopt or provide foster care. ...
I chose to research the discrimination that homosexual individuals suffer from, specifically in parenting rights, for personal reasons. My Aunt Maria is a lesbian and lives in Florida with her partner Janice. ... 5 to 5 million lesbian mothers and 1 to 3 million gay fathers.
