Commentary

The text given is an extract of the short story called “Sonny’s Blues” written by James Baldwin. Because it is a short story it is a narrative/descriptive piece of writing which is not necessarily based on a real story of fact. It is about a black blues player called Sonny who had not played his piano for a very long time, but on that occasion all the group got together and played with their heart, so they put all their soul and feelings to the music and expressed all that to the present spectators. The purpose is to entertain, because it is a story. It is predictable that this story occurs in the United States when the Blues music was used by black people to express all their feelings, because it is all the theme of the story. The theme that it is treated occurs in the United States perhaps in a bar that is dedicated to blues music, this can be deduced by the name of the story and also because of the atmosphere that is perceived.
