Today, in the time of information revolution, where computers play the biggest role in our lives, people are worried about the outcome of this revolution. ... It seems that we are loosing our privacy more than ever.
In this paper I try to show that culture and education play a big role in the way we define privacy. I illustrate that the media and our educational system highly affect the strength of concern over privacy in our society.
Introduction
In recent years, privacy has received special attention by the media and government, at least in North American society. The latest survey shows that 44% of Americans are concerned about privacy. ... [ ] It is essential to realize, first how much attention should be put on this matter and second if we have not done enough, what solutions are available to us at this time. ... I believe that the human mind can have a big influence on daily life and the concerns about some matters can be partially relieved by the education system. ... [ ]
As it seems there should be concern with privacy, since the news is telling us mostly negative consequences of using advanced technology. ...
The purpose of this paper is to introduce a different view to the problem, and check the effect of culture and education over the concern for privacy. ... Why Canada on the other hand, which is highly influenced by American culture, chooses a totally opposite approach towards privacy. ... [2] Another situation is for video surveillance, and Canada thinks having it may diminish privacy while Britain uses 500 cameras with facial recognition and is trying to increase them2. ... If this is true, then the education system needs to be changed and the media should be blamed for such unnecessary anxiety that it has caused through the society. ... In my opinion, these studies show a pattern between social problems and education and, in this case, a relation between privacy concerns and cultural education. ... It might be true that privacy has gained concern through unnecessary media attention; today there are research centers such as EPIC being built with primary focus on privacy protection[ ] in order to address the concern. It is interesting to see how a society with different cultural structure would react to an issue such as privacy.
