Community is a term that has come to mean a group of people, or a neighborhood, and has lost the meanings of kinship, unity, identity, and cooperation. Community is important in all aspects of life, it gives a sense of responsibility and meaning to things we do. Whether we are talking about a community in a profession, in a neighborhood, in a social group or beyond, the intrinsic value of community is priceless. Education perhaps may benefit most from creating a sense of community in the lives of students and teachers. ... When a community is created and kinship and unity are key to a students success, a student is more willing to take responsibility for the education of himself and those around him.
There are a number of alternative schools around the country that place absolute importance in the value of community. ...
In the center for Technology, Environment and Communication (C-TEC), the community I joined upon entering the school, student’s focus on several ongoing scientific projects in the community that focus upon utilizing many different types of resources from universities to community members to come up with a solution for a broad and overreaching community problem.
