I thoroughly enjoyed Ralph Ellison’s essay “Invisible Man.” He is an invisible person to a majority of the world…I can relate to that. ... But unlike Ellison, I haven’t accepted myself as invisible. ... This is also how I see Ellison in “Invisible Man. ... The story of beating a man to near death reminded me of John’s first murder in Sherman Alexie’s novel Indian Killer. ... Again, I understand his feeling of invisibility, so invisible that “out of resentment, you begin to bump people back” (4). ... Although he is his own invisible man, I think he has lost himself in the process of becoming that way. A synonym for invisible is transparent, being able to see right through something. In this sense, Ellison is a transparent man, someone we all can see right through. ... The small man from the front row has the audacity to say “we mean to do right by you but you’ve got to know your place at all times” (31).
